Well, “Hello There”

On Monday evening, June 3rd, I was able to see the first of the planted corn hybrids beginning to emerge. Soil conditions are quite favorable for emergence, and the hybrids were just peeking thru after exactly 1 week post-planting. GDD units since planting are 125 (thru today) and most hybrids will need around 2700 GDU’s to reach black-layer, or physical maturity of the crop.

According to several seed supplier websites, approximately 90 to 120 GDD units are needed to reach VE, or vegetative emergence stage of the growing corn crop, so even with the late planting date, the crop is emerging according to normal agronomic requirements.
